Exmouth Docks

The docks sit right at the mouth to the River Exe; at times the current can reach almost unbelievable speeds. Many smaller boats struggle to get into the docks due to the strength of the current. Due to the tide fishing can be hard at Exmouth however it is still rewarding and should not be ignored if you get the chance to fish it. Over the years many good fish have been caught at Exmouth. Although the huge Flounder, Plaice and Wrasse are rarely heard of here now the odd big one is still about. The bottom is rocky for about 10 yards from the side of the dock wall but then it is just clean sand. There is no need to cast far at this venue so it is an ideal venue for the younger generation to learn. During the summer months the dock can be packed with as many as 25 anglers so it is good to get there early. Boats coming in and out of the harbour can be a problem if your not paying attention as they will cut line caught on there boat and can drag rods in if you’re not holding on. Fresh fish bait can be bought on the dock and live Ragworm or frozen Sandeel can be had from Exmouth Tackle and Sport which is 5 minutes away. Wrasse and Pollock can be caught from anywhere on the dock and will take Ragworm fished tight to the bottom and close in. Mackerel and Garfish can be caught in quantities during the summer months, spinning, feathering or float fishing work well for both species. If your there at dawn or dusk Bass can be had from the slipway on the right hand side of the picture. Using a rubber eel behind a ball weight works best live Sandeel fished in the same way will also work well. Mullet occupy the harbour itself which is a No Fishing zone, they do however venture out into the Harbour mouth and will take free lined bread or mackerel strip. There are signs telling you where you can and can’t fish and fines in place if you break the rules.
